Understanding the Need for a Restart

My work computer kindly reminds me often that it needs to restart. I ignore it. Then it kindly reminds me again, and again. If I continue to ignore it's gentle reminders, it restarts on it's own; no matter what I'm in the middle of. Life is full of transitions, and sometimes we find ourselves at a crossroads where a restart feels necessary (or mandatory). Whether it’s a professional setback, a personal hurdle, or simply the drumming monotony of everyday routines, knowing when to hit the refresh button can be challenging. Have you ever asked yourself, "How do I know when I need a restart?" Let’s delve into some signs that might indicate it’s time for a change. Recognizing the gentle reminders may be easier than waiting for life to restart for you.

Signs That You Might Need a Professional Restart

In the workplace, certain indicators can signal that it's time to reassess your career path. Are you feeling stagnated, unmotivated, or overwhelmed by your current job? These feelings can suggest it might be time for a professional reset. It’s crucial to recognize that giving your career a fresh start doesn't necessarily mean complete upheaval; it could simply mean pursuing new responsibilities, honing your skills, or even considering a lateral move within your organization.

Another sign of needing a restart at work is an environment that feels toxic. If your workplace culture is draining, it may be time to look for an exit strategy. Trust your instincts; they are often more accurate than we give them credit for! Perhaps you enjoy your career but your job has left you feeling bored. Maybe it's time to take on a side hustle or volunteer position that energizes you or start a podcast! Here we are!

Making Personal Changes: The Harder Path?

On the other hand, personal restart moments can often feel more arduous. Unlike professional changes, which can sometimes be prompted by external forces, personal changes usually require self-initiative. This can be intimidating. Think about it: how often do we let our fears and comfort zones dictate our choices?

One thing I have found is that comparison is a hard critic of a restart. I recently decided to start running again for my mental and physical health. I stopped running many years prior due to recurring injuries. I accepted the fact that I wouldn't be able to do that again despite the known benefits. Comparison popped up- Comparison with my younger self, comparison with my injured self, comparison with others. Would I be able to do it? Comparison can delay you or stop you in your tracks.

Recognizing clutter—be it emotional, physical, or relational—is a fundamental aspect of knowing when a personal restart is due. Are your friendships stale, or are you engaging in activities that no longer bring you joy? These are indicators that it might be time for a personal update. This process takes reflection and honesty with oneself. You may need to evaluate whether certain relationships or habits contribute to your happiness or hinder your growth. It’s much easier to say 'yes' to the familiar, but sometimes the hardest decisions lead to the most rewarding outcomes.

Conclusion: The Importance of Embracing Change

Whether you are contemplating a professional reset or a personal update, remember that embracing change often paves the way for new opportunities and growth. The journey toward finding clarity in what a restart means for you can be enlightening and transformative. It's also ok to ask for help, family, friends, a therapist, coach or mentor. There are other people who have been right where you are right now or can give you an objective opinion So, the next time you find yourself feeling stuck, don’t shy away from considering a restart; it might just be what you need to reignite your passion and purpose!
