Leadership Skills: Think Before You Respond

Effective leadership requires thoughtful communication and problem-solving skills. Before hitting send on that email or making impulsive decisions, consider these key questions to improve workplace dynamics and enhance your leadership abilities.

Dear Supervisor: Maybe Don't Hit Send Yet

We've all had that moment. You read an email from an employee and suddenly you're drafting a response that would absolutely be used against you in HR training. Or someone walks into your office with, "You're not going to believe what happened..." Oh, Jessica. Actually...I probably am.

Leadership is a daily exercise in pretending you have your life together while internally wondering if it's too late to become a beach bartender. Before you respond, vent, or accidentally create your own workplace horror story, ask yourself these three questions.

Is This Actually a Problem...or Just Tuesday?

Not every inconvenience requires a committee meeting. Someone forgot to copy you on an email. Someone forgets your position. Two coworkers are arguing over something silly. Someone says they're "just being honest."

Take a breath.

Sometimes it's a genuine issue that needs your attention. Sometimes people just need five minutes and a snack. Learning the difference is one of the most underrated leadership skills.

Am I Fixing It...or Feeding It?

Here's a fun leadership trap: solving everyone's problems for them. Congratulations! You've officially become the department's emotional support supervisor. Before jumping in to rescue everyone, ask yourself if this is actually your problem to solve.

Could they have a conversation themselves?
Have they even tried?
Are you creating capable employees—or just making yourself busier?

Spoiler alert: If you're exhausted all the time, this might be why.

Will Future Me Thank Present Me?

Future You has enough problems. Don't make their life harder by sending the spicy email, making promises you can't keep, or avoiding the awkward conversation because "it's Friday."

Most leadership problems don't disappear. They just come back on Monday wearing a fake mustache. A calm conversation today usually beats three months of passive-aggressive Teams messages.

The Bottom Line

Nobody gets promoted because they magically know how to lead people. Most of us are figuring it out: one awkward conversation, one difficult employee, and one "What fresh chaotic hell is this?" moment at a time.

So before you hit Send, call an emergency meeting, or dramatically announce, "We've got to do something about this," ask yourself those three questions.

Your blood pressure (and probably your staff) will thank you.
