Rocks, Sandals, and Epiphanies

Today, as I was out enjoying my run, I experienced the all-too-familiar hiccup of having a rock find its way into my low-profile running sandals. Initial thoughts raced through my head: "What’s the point of running in sandals if rocks are going to get in them?" But here’s the thing—this isn’t a frequent occurrence. The reality is that when you run in sandals, you adapt to the minor inconveniences that might come your way.

Shifting Perspectives

After feeling the rock jagged against my foot, I began to contemplate my discomfort. Sure, it was annoying, but it wasn’t unbearable. In fact, with sandals, just as easily as a rock may enter my shoe, it may just as quickly exit. As I continued my run, I wondered whether I should stop to manually remove the irritant or just let it be. The thought crossed my mind: sometimes discomfort doesn't have to derail your progress; it can simply be a part of the journey.

From the Regular Way to the Easy Way

For more than 15 years, I’ve opted to hike and walk in sandals rather than the traditional hiking boots. In the beginning, I frequently received concerned looks and nearly predictable questions about rocks getting in my shoes. When asked, “What do you do when you get a rock in your shoe?” I’d hit them back with the same question. The point is, we all know that when wearing boots, the process of ridding yourself of a rock can be tedious. You have to find a place to sit, undo your laces, possibly take off a soggy sock, only to find the rock stubbornly still lodged into the toe of your boot.

Through experience, I’ve learned that adjusting your mindset is essential. Rather than allowing rocks to deter me from my path, I learned to let them come and go. Life, much like running in sandals, is about allowing discomfort without letting it halt your progress.

The Lesson Beyond Sandals

This experience serves as a metaphor for life and career trajectories. We’re often indoctrinated into following the ‘regular’ way, where obstacles can trip us up and delay our progress. However, if we can learn to acknowledge the difficulties while still moving forward, we may find that the best way is to embrace the bumps along the road. Just like the rock in my sandal, these challenges can become mere blips on our journey if we choose to power through.

So, whether or not you care to actually run in sandals, consider this: maybe embracing the discomfort of your own journey can lead you to a new and easier path forward. Who knows? You might discover that this ‘easy way’ is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
